The Accord Party’s former presidential candidate, Prof. Christopher Imumolen, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is well positioned to win the 2027 presidential election, citing his administration’s reforms, leadership and growing support across the country.

Imumolen stated this on Friday in Lagos while announcing his withdrawal from the 2027 presidential race and declaring his support for Tinubu’s re-election.

He said the decision followed extensive consultations with the leadership and members of the Accord Party, stressing that national interest should take precedence over personal ambition and partisan considerations.

According to him, Nigerians are beginning to appreciate the long-term benefits of the Tinubu administration’s reform agenda despite the economic challenges confronting the country.

“Tinubu will win because of his people-oriented programmes and the massive support he has received from different parts of the country.

“There is focus. Let us forget about the challenges of inflation and security. There must be progression.

“If another person comes in 2027, I believe we will have a setback and terrible problem as a nation.

“He has identified the challenges and we need to move from where we are to the next phase. That is why we are supporting him and he will win. We have made up our minds and we will not go back,” Imumolen said.

He said Tinubu’s reform agenda was largely consistent with his own manifesto, particularly in the areas of economic transformation, education, youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, industrialisation and national development.

Imumolen said the Accord party’s decision to support the President was based on 10 considerations arising from its assessment of the administration’s performance and Nigeria’s future development needs.

He listed Tinubu’s courage in implementing difficult economic reforms, demonstrated leadership capacity and commitment to continuity in development projects among the first three reasons for the endorsement.

He identified youth empowerment, bridging the generational leadership gap and the appointment of competent individuals to strategic public offices as the fourth, fifth and sixth considerations.

According to him, the remaining factors included placing national interest above personal ambition, ensuring policy continuity and political stability, sustaining reforms, demonstrating transparency through the early endorsement and promoting collaboration in the national interest.

“Over the last four years, I was one of those who criticised the President. However, I have also witnessed his leadership style and the progress his administration has made,” he said.

The Accord chieftain also dismissed the possibility of any opposition presidential candidate, including candidates from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and National Democratic Congress (NDC), having a stronger prospect than Tinubu in 2027.
