Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has clarified the meanings of the “Not Admitted”, “Admission in Progress” and “Admitted” statuses displayed on candidates’ Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).

The Board, in an explainer video shared on Thursday, advised candidates to regularly check their CAPS for updates as institutions continue with the admission process.

JAMB explained that a candidate whose CAPS displays “Not Admitted” has not yet been offered admission, but the status does not necessarily mean the candidate will not eventually secure admission.

According to the Board, such candidates should continue checking their CAPS for possible changes.

On the “Admission in Progress” status, JAMB said it could mean that the institution had proposed the candidate for admission, but the process was still awaiting the recommendation of the head of the institution.

The Board said the status could also apply where the head of the institution had recommended the candidate, but the proposed admission was still awaiting JAMB’s approval or disapproval.

JAMB, however, cautioned candidates against interpreting “Admission in Progress” as confirmation that they had secured admission.

“Please note that ‘Admission in Progress’ does not mean automatic admission,” the Board stated.

It explained that a proposed admission could still be rejected if the candidate failed to meet the required conditions.

“This is because the recommended offer could still be disapproved by the Board if you don’t meet the prerequisite requirements,” JAMB said.

According to the Board, a candidate’s status changes to “Admitted” only after JAMB officially approves the admission offer.

It said this is when candidates receive the notification: “CONGRATULATIONS, YOU HAVE BEEN OFFERED ADMISSION.”

Candidates who receive the admission offer can then use CAPS to accept or reject it.

JAMB further noted that CAPS statuses could change at different stages of the admission process, urging candidates to remain patient and continue checking the platform.

“Remember, your CAPS status will keep changing as the admission process continues until the final stage where you print your admission letter,” the Board said.

The Board advised candidates to rely on JAMB’s official channels for verified information and avoid acting on unconfirmed claims about their admission status.
