Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi’s running mate in the 2023 election, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has made a striking assessment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s political strength ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Baba-Ahmed said Tinubu has built such a formidable political structure and network of alliances over the years that stopping his bid for a second term could prove extremely difficult.

Speaking during an interview with Trust TV, the former LP vice-presidential candidate acknowledged Tinubu’s long-term political organisation, even while expressing disagreement with some of the President’s policies.

According to him, Tinubu did more than merely plan his political ascent; he spent years building the structures and alliances that eventually propelled him to the presidency.

«“Even though I don’t entirely agree with him, he did what others were not able to do. He organised for 16 years, not just plan,” Baba-Ahmed said.»

He recalled Tinubu’s role in building a political coalition that eventually brought former President Muhammadu Buhari, a northerner, into the political equation.

“He organised for 16 years against all odds, he brought in Buhari from retirement. Buhari is from across the Niger. He stood for that,” he added.

‘Tinubu Has Mastered Nigeria’s Political Space’

Baba-Ahmed described Tinubu’s emergence as president in 2023 as an extraordinary political accomplishment, arguing that the President has accumulated considerable influence across Nigeria’s political landscape.

He suggested that Tinubu’s political reach extends beyond the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), making it difficult for opposition parties to establish a formidable united front ahead of 2027.
