The Delta State Police Command has rescued a woman abducted by armed men in Sapele and arrested eight suspects during separate operations in the state.

The woman was ambushed by the gunmen at the entrance of her residence along Eko-Amukpe Road on Wednesday evening while attempting to drive into her compound.

The suspects reportedly fired several shots into the air before taking her into a nearby bush.

According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, in a statement issued on Friday, police operatives, supported by local vigilantes, launched an intensive search of the surrounding bushes and continued the operation until the early hours of Thursday.

Edafe said: “At about 1945hrs on 2nd September 2026, the Sapele Division received a distress report that a woman had been ambushed by armed men at the entrance of her residence along Eko Amukpe Road while attempting to drive into her compound.

“The suspects fired several shots into the air before taking her into a nearby bush.

“Upon receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer, Sapele Division, immediately mobilised patrol and surveillance teams to the scene, where expended AK-47 ammunition shells were recovered.

“Operatives, supported by local vigilantes, thereafter commenced an intensive search of the surrounding bushes. The search was sustained throughout the night into the morning of 3rd September 2026, mounting pressure on the kidnappers and forcing them to abandon the victim and flee.

“The woman was subsequently located and rescued unharmed and has since been reunited with her family.

“The Command has intensified efforts to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.”

Meanwhile, operatives of the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), acting on credible intelligence, raided suspected criminal black spots in Abraka as part of an ongoing investigation into an attempted murder case.

The operation led to the arrest of eight suspects and the recovery of three locally made pistols, tramadol and other suspected illicit drugs.

The suspects are Evans Adamda, Mamatime Micheal, Wale Morakinya, Anabono, Godspower, Theophilus Philip, Robinson Oghenewiro and Inoni Ejiroghene.

The suspects and exhibits, according to the statement, are in police custody, while investigation is ongoing to establish their individual involvement in the attempted murder and other criminal activities in the area.

The State Commissioner of Police, Samuel E. Erale, commended the operatives and local vigilantes for the successes recorded.

Erale reiterated the command’s determination to sustain intelligence-led operations and decisive action against kidnappers, cultists and other criminal elements across the state.

He assured residents that the command would continue to identify criminal hideouts, apprehend offenders and recover illicit weapons.

The commissioner also urged members of the public to support the police by providing timely and credible information on criminal activities.
