A police sergeant, Johnson Okediji, has died after allegedly being run over by a 20-year-old driver, Olumide Olusola, during a stop-and-search operation in the Egbeda area of Lagos State.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists on the activities of the command in September.

Fatai said the incident occurred on Saturday, September 26, along Olugbede Street, Egbeda, when officers signalled a Lexus ES 350, with registration number FKJ 223 KX, to stop.

According to him, the driver initially stopped but suddenly sped off as Okediji approached the driver’s side, knocking the officer down and dragging him under the vehicle for several metres.

He said the driver was eventually chased and arrested, while the injured officer was taken to a nearby hospital and later referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The police commissioner said the officer’s remains had been deposited at the Mainland Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while the vehicle had been recovered.

However, the suspect, while speaking to journalists during his parade, claimed that the vehicle’s brakes failed and that he could not stop it.

He said, “I did not kill the policeman intentionally; it was due to the vehicle’s brake failure.”
