The Federal Government and the Lagos State Government have intensified collaboration to improve electricity supply in the state, with key stakeholders agreeing on practical measures to address challenges confronting the power sector.
The commitment was reached at a Ministerial Implementation Retreat with Federal Authorities on the Clean Lagos Electricity Market (CLEM), hosted by the Lagos State Government on Monday.
The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, said the retreat was aimed at moving beyond policy discussions to develop practical interventions that would deliver a more reliable and efficient electricity market in Lagos.
Tegbe said discussions focused on critical issues affecting the sector, including the electricity market, regulatory framework, as well as technical and operational challenges requiring both immediate and long-term solutions.
He noted that Lagos remained central to Nigeria’s electricity demand, making effective collaboration between federal and state institutions crucial to expanding access to reliable power.
According to him, a steering committee comprising relevant stakeholders in the power sector would oversee the implementation of the decisions reached at the retreat and ensure that the agreed measures translated into concrete action.
Speaking on the outcome of the engagement, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, described the discussions as frank and productive, saying participants confronted the major challenges facing the electricity sector and identified practical solutions.
Sanwo-Olu expressed satisfaction with the participation of key institutions, including the Transmission Company of Nigeria, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, Rural Electrification Agency and other stakeholders in the power sector.
The governor stressed that the ultimate objective of the initiative was to ensure that residents and electricity consumers in Lagos felt the impact of the collaboration through improved power supply.
He said the initiative was consistent with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of building a more reliable and sustainable electricity supply system across Nigeria, with Lagos playing a strategic role in achieving the objective.
