Iyabo obasanjo and Tinubu
Professor Iyabo Obasanjo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial candidate for Ogun Central, has dismissed reports that she is considering a political alliance with Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that she has never met the former Anambra State governor for political discussions.
Obi is the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2027 election.
Obasanjo, a daughter of former Nigerian President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and a former senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District, also declared her support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, citing her longstanding political relationship with him.
“I am supporting Tinubu because I know him best of all the presidential candidates as a much senior politician, and he has always treated me with respect,” she said.
She also rejected claims that she was negotiating or considering any political arrangement involving Obi, the NDC presidential candidate.
“I have never met Obi for any political discussions ever,” she stated.
The clarification followed an earlier publication by Very Nigerian newspaper, which cited sources as saying that a proposed political arrangement known as a “Rainbow Coalition” was emerging in Ogun Central ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to the report, Obasanjo was considering endorsing Obi as part of a cross-party voting arrangement.
However, her campaign organisation rejected the claims, describing the publication as fabricated and alleging that it was intended to mislead voters and create confusion within the PDP.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Peter Macjob, the Iyabo Obasanjo Senatorial Campaign Organisation said no meetings, consultations or agreements had taken place between Obasanjo and Obi concerning any proposed political alliance.
The organisation maintained that Obasanjo remained the duly cleared PDP senatorial candidate for Ogun Central and was focused on her bid to return to the National Assembly.
It urged voters and media organisations to disregard the report, arguing that political discussions should focus on candidates’ records, programmes and capacity to deliver rather than unsubstantiated claims about secret arrangements.
The campaign organisation added that its priority remained mobilising support across Ogun Central and presenting Obasanjo’s candidacy as an opportunity to promote effective representation and grassroots development.
Obasanjo’s declaration of support for Tinubu comes despite her candidacy under the PDP, highlighting the distinction between her party affiliation in the senatorial race and her stated preference in the presidential contest.
Her campaign organisation reiterated its call for issue-based politics, urging voters to assess candidates on their individual merits and their ability to address the needs of the electorate.
