The monarch reportedly collapsed on Wednesday and was rushed to a hospital, where he remained unconscious for about 24 hours before he died on Thursday evening.
The Onidogun of Idogun, Oba Moses Ekundayo Bakare, the traditional ruler of Idogun in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State, has died after reportedly collapsing and spending 24 hours in a coma.
The monarch reportedly collapsed on Wednesday and was rushed to a hospital, where he remained unconscious for about 24 hours before he died on Thursday evening.
His death comes months after a crisis erupted in Idogun in October 2025, when some residents of the community publicly assaulted him in an incident captured in a viral video that sparked widespread reactions.
Following the incident, the monarch reportedly left the community and remained away until his death.
The Ondo State government had earlier constituted a panel of inquiry to investigate the crisis that led to the public assault on the traditional ruler and recommend measures to address the situation.
However, the panel’s report has yet to be made public, leaving questions about the outcome of the investigation and the steps taken by the government to resolve the dispute.
The Ondo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, who is also an indigene of Idogun, confirmed the monarch’s death, according to Channels TV report.
Ajanaku said the chiefs of the community informed him of the development and conveyed the state government’s condolences to the family of the deceased monarch and the entire Idogun community.
He also appealed to residents to maintain peace and order during the mourning period, warning against any acts of violence that could further escalate tensions in the community.
Meanwhile, reports from Idogun indicated that the crisis surrounding the late monarch had continued even after his death.
According to the reports, some indigenes of the town who opposed the late monarch prevented his corpse from being brought into the community on Thursday.
The residents reportedly blocked the road with logs of wood, obstructing those conveying the monarch’s remains and forcing them to turn back.
The corpse was subsequently taken back to a mortuary in Owo, according to the reports.
