What began with a complaint from motorists at a busy Abuja junction has now led to the arrest of three men, including two serving police officers.
But what investigators reportedly found after the arrests made the situation more serious.
Fifteen drivers’ licences, belonging to different members of the public, were recovered from the suspects.
The incident happened on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, around Transcorp Junction in Maitama, Abuja, after the police received a distress call concerning extortion by officers operating in the area.
The call came in at about 2:50 in the afternoon.
Following the complaint, officers from the Maitama Division were mobilised to the location. A team led by the Divisional Crime Officer, DCO 4, was sent to investigate what was happening.
When the team arrived, three suspects were taken into custody.
They were identified as ASP Michael Godwin, police number AP No. 188981, who is attached to Force Transport at Force Headquarters in Abuja; Inspector Demeka’a Yarkwan, with police number AP No. 346638, attached to Wuse Division; and Sergeant William Udokang, a former police officer who had already been dismissed from the Force.
The investigation took an important turn when officers reportedly recovered 15 drivers’ licences from the three men.
The documents were not registered to the suspects. They belonged to different people.
That immediately raised questions about how the licences had ended up in their possession and what had happened to the motorists who owned them.
Investigators began contacting some of the licence holders’ next of kin in an effort to establish how the documents were obtained.
Information gathered during the preliminary stage of the investigation indicated that some motorists had their licences taken from them by the officers.
The motorists were then said to have been required to make payments before the documents could be recovered.
The amounts involved reportedly ranged from ₦50,000 to as much as ₦183,000.
At this stage, however, the police investigation is still ongoing.
Authorities are working to identify and locate all 15 owners of the recovered licences. Investigators are also expected to obtain further statements and information from the affected motorists to establish what exactly happened in each case.
The arrests involve two officers who are still serving in the Nigeria Police Force and a third suspect who had already been dismissed.
The case has also drawn attention to continuing concerns surrounding complaints of extortion and other corrupt practices involving some law enforcement personnel.
For now, the allegations remain allegations. The three suspects are being investigated, and no court has established their guilt.
The Maitama Division has since forwarded its situation report to superior police authorities for further directives and whatever action may be required as the investigation continues.
