Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his intention to retire from international football after Portugal’s November fixtures, bringing an end to a record-breaking 23-year career with the national team.
The 41-year-old made the announcement in a video shared on social media on Thursday, November 5, saying it was time to hand over Portugal’s iconic number seven shirt to the next generation.
Ronaldo leaves the international stage with 234 appearances and 146 goals for Portugal, making him the most-capped player and highest goalscorer in men’s international football.
He captained Portugal to its first European Championship title in 2016 and also helped the country win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025. He featured in six FIFA World Cups during his international career.
Portugal are scheduled to face Denmark on November 14 and Wales on November 17. These matches are expected to be Ronaldo’s final appearances for his country.
His international retirement does not mean he is ending his club career, as he continues to play for Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.
