The police have made some arrests following Wednesday’s invasion of the Lagos house of the late winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief Moshood Abiola, where property worth millions of naira were stolen.
It was learnt that the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, had visited the family.
Odumosu told our correspondent that some arrests had been made, adding that investigation had commenced into the incident.
The CP stated, “Three people were involved in the operation and from what I gathered when I visited the house today (Wednesday), only one of the suspects was armed. The suspects gained entry through the canal, because the building backed a canal, and I was told that some jewellery and money were stolen. I have beefed up security in the area and also contacted the Idiroko and Seme borders to be on high alert.
“None of the residents, including Chie MKO Abiola’s wife, Bisi, and two girls in the house, was attacked or injured during the operation. We have made some arrests and commenced investigation into the incident.”
“Armed robbers invaded the house of MKO Abiola, off Toyin Street, in the Opebi area of Ikeja, Lagos State. They took away a lot of valuable items,” a source in the area had earlier told PUNCH Metro.
When our correspondent visited Abiola’s house, a police patrol vehicle was stationed in front of the building.
A security guard on the premises, however, declined to speak to our correspondent on the incident.
When asked about the robbery attack, the security guard said, “Is that why you are here? Please leave this place; this is a family house.”
However, a resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the hoodlums gained entry into the building through the back gate, adding that they dug the ground to gain access into the building.
“The operation was carried out around 4am when the security guards were asleep. The robbers dug the ground through the back gate and gained entry. They carted away property and escaped,” the resident stated.
