President Tinubu And Fubara
President Bola Tinubu is currently holding a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja with Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara and key leaders from Ogoniland.
Governor Fubara arrived at the meeting accompanied by Senator Lee Maeba.
Other prominent members of the delegation included Senators Magnus Abe, Olaka Nwogu, Bennett Birabi, Barry Mpigi, and Joe Poroma. Also in attendance were Chief Victor Giadom, Chief Kenneth Kobani, Monsignor Pius Kii, and Ledum Mitee.
Representing the Federal Government and key stakeholders were the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abba, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Idris Mohammed, the Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, and the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
Vanguard reports that although the agenda for the meeting was not officially disclosed, sources suggest that discussions likely revolve around the Ogoni clean-up initiative and the potential resumption of oil exploration activities in the region.
This development follows recent calls by a coalition of civil society organisations demanding a $1 trillion allocation from the Federal Government for the cleanup of the Niger Delta and compensation for lost livelihoods. These demands were emphasized as a precondition for resuming crude oil production in Ogoniland.
In a statement issued by groups including Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria, Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA), and the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), concerns were raised over the Federal Government’s reported plans to restart oil production in the community.
The statement described the move as a disregard for environmental justice, citing the severe environmental degradation caused by decades of oil activities in the region.
The groups referenced the 2011 UNEP report, which documented extensive pollution of land, water, and air in Ogoniland.
The coalition expressed disappointment that the UNEP recommendations have not been fully implemented, nor has the cleanup of the region been prioritized.
