A Celestial Church of Christ evangelist, Abidemi Odukoya, and his wife, Adenike, have reportedly died under separate circumstances following an alleged domestic dispute at their home in the Akinode/Ibogun community of Ogun State.
According to PUNCH Metro, the incident happened in the early hours of Monday, August 25, after an alleged disagreement between the couple reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation.
During the altercation, Adenike was reportedly injured and left unconscious, while her husband allegedly fled their residence.
A former Chairman of the Community Development Association, Adejimi Olawumi, explained in a video shared by Arole TV on Wednesday that he became aware of the situation after hearing residents shouting for help.
Olawumi said it was around 1 a.m. when he heard neighbours shouting “thief, thief.” As he came outside, he saw the couple’s son, Daniel, and asked him what had happened. Daniel reportedly told him that the situation involved his mother and father.
Olawumi then called other neighbours, and when they entered the couple’s home, they found Adenike lying in a pool of blood.
According to him, there was no vehicle available at the time to immediately transport her to a hospital.
Daniel reportedly told residents that he did not witness what happened between his parents because he had been in another room when the incident occurred.
Members of the community subsequently began gathering at the residence.
Olawumi said residents later realised that Odukoya was nowhere to be found, prompting members of the CDA to begin searching for him.
The community’s area chairman was also informed about what had happened.
However, residents later received information that Odukoya had been hit by a vehicle in the Ifo area of Ogun State.
According to Olawumi, police officers took the evangelist to a hospital, where his identity was eventually confirmed. Members of the CDA then began making arrangements to return his remains home.
Olawumi said the community had never witnessed an incident like this involving the couple before, although residents were aware that the husband and wife sometimes had disagreements and would later resolve them between themselves.
Meanwhile, Odukoya’s younger sister, speaking in a video circulating online, claimed that the couple had experienced repeated disagreements before their deaths.
She said she had been hearing for some time that the couple frequently fought.
According to her, sometime around April, Odukoya and his wife visited her following an earlier altercation. Odukoya reportedly explained what had happened between them and told her that the disagreement was eventually resolved at a police station.
She said she advised both of them to exercise patience with each other because she believed it was wrong for a husband and wife to fight.
The evangelist’s sister added that the couple had reportedly been having disagreements for a long time and that other people had previously intervened to settle their differences.
She said the family was therefore shocked when they later received news that both husband and wife had died.
According to her, the family learnt about the incident after one of Odukoya’s siblings received a phone call informing them of what had happened. Arrangements were subsequently made concerning the remains of the deceased couple.
Adenike was reportedly buried on the same day the incident occurred, while her husband, Abidemi Odukoya, was buried on Wednesday, September 2.
In separate footage viewed by PUNCH Metro on Wednesday, some clerics could be seen conducting burial rites over the evangelist’s remains at an undisclosed location.
However, the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths of the husband and wife remained unclear as of the time the report was filed.
When contacted on Wednesday, the Deputy Spokesman of the Ogun State Police Command, Opeyemi Oluborode, confirmed that the incident had occurred.
He added that police authorities had commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
