In a decisive move to curb the rising tide of cyber pornography in Nigeria, the House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to ensure the immediate blocking of all pornographic websites in the country.
The resolution, passed following a motion sponsored by Dalhatu Tafoki, an All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker from Katsina State, calls on all internet service providers to enforce the ban without delay.
While presenting the motion, Tafoki emphasized that cyber pornography has become a global concern, yet Nigeria has not taken sufficient measures to address the issue. He further argued that Nigeria, being a “highly religious country,” upholds moral and ethical values that prohibit nudity and obscenity.
The lawmaker pointed out that several nations across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have implemented strict laws to ban pornographic content. He also referenced expert opinions from psychologists and sociologists, warning of the detrimental effects of pornography, which, he argued, could lead to issues such as adultery, prostitution, and addiction.
“Renowned psychologists and sociologists around the world have issued stern warnings on the psychological, sociological, and mental consequences of viewing pornographic content,” Tafoki stated.
Following his submission, Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, subjected the motion to a voice vote, with the majority of lawmakers voting in favor of the resolution. The House further instructed the NCC to impose penalties on internet service providers that fail to comply with the directive.
As the implementation process begins, stakeholders and the general public await further details on how the NCC and service providers will execute the directive effectively.
Lagos Reporters will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates on the enforcement and implications of this directive.
