At least three people were killed and one was injured in a plane crash near Boca Raton, South Florida, United States, on Friday morning.
The crash, which occurred near a major interstate highway, pushed a car onto railroad tracks, leading to their closure, the Associated Press reports.
Boca Raton Fire Rescue Assistant Chief, Michael LaSalle, confirmed that the crash created a fireball upon impact, killing all three people aboard.
LaSalle also stated that several roads near the Boca Raton Airport, close to Interstate 95, would remain closed as authorities investigated the scene.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) identified the plane as a Cessna 310, which had three people on board.
The aircraft went down around 10:20am shortly after departing from Boca Raton Airport, bound for Tallahassee.
Fire officials reported that the crash caused a car to be pushed onto the railroad tracks, leading to their closure.
Josh Orsino, 31, who was stopped at a red light on a nearby overpass, recalled hearing a loud explosion. “We’re just sitting there, and I see the palm trees start catching on fire,” Orsino said.
“I thought it was an oil rig or a car crash type thing.” He added, “So I didn’t know if the fire was going to come towards the vehicles, I mean, my first instinct was like, I got to get off this bridge. I’m getting out of here.”
Miguel Coka, 51, who works near the Boca Raton airport, described feeling a rumble from the crash. “There was a rumble and everyone in the building felt it,” Coka said. Shocked by the sight, he captured video of the smoke and flames from his office balcony.
Boca Raton Mayor, Scott Singer, expressed his condolences, saying, “We are deeply saddened to confirm that a plane crash occurred earlier today within our community.
“At this time, details are still emerging, and we are working closely with emergency responders and authorities.” He added, “Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic event. We ask for patience and respect for the families involved as investigations continue.”
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the cause of the crash.
This tragedy follows another aviation disaster in New York City the previous day, in which a sightseeing helicopter crashed, killing the pilot and five Spanish tourists.
Meanwhile, SaharaReporters had earlier reported on Friday morning how family of five Spanish tourists—Agustín Escobar, his wife Mercè Camprubí Montal, and their children aged 4, 5 and 11—and their pilot have died after their helicopter crashed into the Hudson River in New York City.
The couple, both top executives at Siemens, were on a sightseeing trip with their young children when tragedy struck. The pilot, whose identity has not yet been released, was also killed in the crash.
“All were onboard the helicopter at the time of the crash, which is under investigation,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said. “Our hearts go out to the families.”
The Bell 206 helicopter, operated by New York Helicopters, took off from Downtown Skyport in lower Manhattan at 14:59 local time (19:59 BST).
It lost control after turning near the George Washington Bridge and plunged into the Hudson River around 15:17 EDT (20:17 GMT).
