TikTok’s Sub-Saharan Africa Head of Communications, Keagile Makgoba, says the platform is a content discovery tool, not a traditional social media network.
Speaking at a Lagos workshop, she explained that TikTok’s algorithm prioritizes content quality over social connections, with features like the STEM feed promoting educational content. Makgoba also highlighted TikTok’s global-local policy approach and mental health initiatives that reached over 173 million impressions in 2023.
