Merrill Pittman Cooper

At 101 years old, Merrill Pittman Cooper finally earned his high school diploma, fulfilling a lifelong dream. He initially attended Storer College in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, studying Latin, biology, history, English and mathematics from 1934 to 1938.

However, Cooper had to drop out in his senior year due to financial constraints, when his family relocated to Philadelphia.

Eighty-four years later, Cooper’s family surprised him with a graduation ceremony, where he received his diploma from Jefferson County Schools’ Superintendent Bondy Shay Gibson-Learn.
