The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the demolition of plazas at the ASPAMDA Market within the Lagos Trade Fair Complex, describing the exercise as an “economic destruction” that has left legitimate traders in anguish.
Obi led a high-powered delegation of lawmakers on a solidarity visit to the demolished site. Among those who accompanied him were Senators Enyinnaya Abaribe, Victor Umeh, Col. Austin Akobundu, and Tony Nwoye, alongside House of Representatives members Segun Sowunmi and George Adegeye. Labour Party’s Lagos governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, and the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Tanko Yunusa, were also present.
Addressing traders after the visit, Obi praised them for maintaining peace despite the “painful loss and injustice,” commending their restraint in the face of provocation. He urged governments at all levels to show compassion and fairness, especially as many of the affected traders had taken loans to finance their investments.
“Destroying legitimate businesses without due process is not only unjust but also economically destructive,” Obi said. “A nation that aspires to progress must protect enterprise, encourage productivity, and defend the dignity of its citizens. Incidents like this have no place in a society that seeks fairness, stability, and shared prosperity.”
The lawmakers who joined the visit pledged to launch investigations into the demolition and ensure accountability for what they described as a brazen disregard for the rule of law.
Traders at the ASPAMDA Market insist they obtained the necessary approvals for their structures before the demolition, further fueling outrage over the incident.
