Luiz Diaz and Michael Olise scored two stunning late goals to send Bayern Munich into the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) following a 4-3 win over Real Madrid on the night, and a 6-4 aggregate win at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.
The two late goals proved vital for the German side against a Real Madrid side that gave them a real scare until Eduardo Camavinga’s red card softened their path to victory.
Real Madrid took the lead within 45 seconds through Arda Guler, who intercepted Manuel Neuer’s poor pass to send a long-range effort into the empty net, for the fastest UCL goal of the season. Bayern were behind for only five minutes, Pavlovic headed into the net from Joshua Kimmich’s corner kick delivery to regain their aggregate lead.
Guler had not scored a UCL goal before tonight, but doubled his tally with a well-taken free kick from just outside the area that Neuer could only push into the net.
Harry Kane slotted home the equaliser for his 50th goal of the season in all competitions. Mbappe ensured Real went into the break ahead on the night and level on aggregate when he finished off a counterattack led by Vinicius Jr., who released the French striker for his 40th goal of the season that handed the visitors a 3-2 at halftime.
Real Madrid continued to threaten in the second half with chances fluffed by both Mbappe and Vinicius Jr, before Camavinga’s moments of indiscipline cost the 15-time UCL winners. The French midfielder picked up the first yellow card for pulling Jamal Musiala, before receiving the second for time-wasting to reduce Real to 10 men.
Vincent Kompany’s team capitalised on the man advantage through Diaz’s curler into the top corner from the left, before Olise replicated with a similar strike on the right to send Bayern through, and ended Real Madrid’s nine-match unbeaten streak that started in 2012. It is also the first time the Bavarians have defeated Real Madrid home and away in 25 years.
Bayern Munich will face Paris Saint-Germain in the last four of the competition. Arsenal completes the semi-final quartet despite a goalless draw with Sporting Lisbon at the Emirates Stadium, for a 1-0 aggregate win, and the Gunners will face Atletico Madrid in the next stage.
