Reports indicate that some U.S. lawmakers are considering or discussing impeachment-related action against Eleanor Ross following a judicial misconduct investigation that found she engaged in a sexual relationship with a senior Atlanta police official, including encounters in her chambers during business hours.
The investigation also found that she initially made false statements to investigators before later admitting the relationship.
The judge received a private reprimand from the federal judiciary rather than removal from office. The misconduct report described the relationship as demonstrating a “gross lack of judgment” and said it created an uncomfortable workplace environment for law clerks. Additional findings included attendance at a partisan political event, which raised concerns about judicial ethics.
Recent reports show that members of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, including Chairman Jim Jordan, have been reviewing the matter and discussing possible congressional action. However, as of the latest available reports, no impeachment vote has occurred and formal impeachment proceedings have not been completed.
Federal judges hold lifetime appointments under the U.S. Constitution and can only be removed through impeachment by the U.S. House of Representatives and conviction by the Senate. Historically, judicial impeachments are rare.
