Israel and Iran have announced a pause in hostilities less than 24 hours after both countries exchanged strikes despite a ceasefire in place.
The pause followed a call by US President Donald Trump on Monday asking both nations to end the strikes immediately.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the suspension of strikes in a video statement.
“At the moment, we are holding our fire, because after we struck the terror regime in Tehran, it ceased attacking us,” Netanyahu said, adding that Israel would respond with “overwhelming force” if Iran resumed attacks.
Iran also announced it was halting attacks on Israel but threatened a further response if Israel continued its “aggression” in Lebanon, where the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) have targeted Hezbollah.
“The cessation of armed forces operations is announced,” Khatam al-Anbiya, Iran’s emergency military command, said in a statement carried by Iranian media.
“However, it is emphasized that if the aggression and acts of malice continue, including in southern Lebanon, much more severe and crushing measures than before will be forthcoming.”
Trump and Netanyahu reportedly spoke over the phone before the Israeli prime minister announced the call to halt strikes.
In a separate Truth Social post earlier, Trump said final negotiations on peace were proceeding.
