A 42-year-old trader and mother of three, Mrs. Olaitan Amere, was brutally killed in her home in Ajegunle, Ido-Ekiti, the headquarters of Ido/Osi Local Government Area of Ekiti State, in an incident that has shocked residents.
The attack occurred at about 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2026.
According to a relative of the deceased, Mr. Dare Akinola, there had been an earlier attempt to set her residence ablaze the previous day.
He said a passerby noticed flames coming from a window and raised the alarm, preventing the fire from spreading.
However, the following night, the attackers allegedly returned and fatally attacked Mrs. Amere with machetes, inflicting multiple injuries to her head, face, legs and other parts of her body.
Akinola further alleged that after the killing, the assailants attempted to burn the body by covering it with clothes and other household items and leaving a container of petrol at the scene.
The deceased’s elder sister, Funmilola Adewumi, she became worried after Olaitan could not be reached that night.
She said family members traced her phone to her residence, where they found her lifeless body lying in a pool of blood. Adewumi also claimed that her sister had previously received threats before the fatal attack.
Police have since arrested a suspect in connection with the killing. The suspect, identified as Ismail Tunji Ibiyeye, is currently in custody at the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) office in Ado-Ekiti.
Ibiyeye, who was reportedly in a relationship with the deceased, is said to be an environmental staff member at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti, and a native of Ofa, Kwara State.
According to sources, the suspect has made statements to investigators regarding the incident. However, police investigations are still ongoing, and no court has determined his guilt.
The late Olaitan Amere was known to have cared for her elderly, physically challenged mother following her separation from her husband.
The Ekiti State Police Command is continuing its investigation into the case.
