The recent assassination of Toba Ajiboye, popularly called Ijaya, a prominent leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), has reignited the fears that the dark days that surrounded the activities of the union in Lagos State might be gradually returning.

For decades now, there has been a series of assassinations that sent shivers down the spines of many Lagosians and Nigerians in general.

His killing adds to the list of disturbing assassinations in the NURTW struggle for power, politics and leadership in Lagos, the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria.

Below is the full list of popular NURTW leaders who have been assassinated in Nigeria:

1. Alhaji Saka Saula (2008): Alhaji Saka Saula, during his lifetime, was a prominent leader of the NURTW who unknown gunmen assassinated in Lagos. On January 6, 2008, the NURTW leader was gunned down at around 9:30pm in front of his residence.

It was learnt that upon sighting his killers, Saula tried evading them, but was cornered and overpowered by the assailants.

Before his death, Saula served as the acting state Chairman of NURTW in Lagos State and was admired by many members of the union due to his generosity.

According to report, the late union leader was involved in acts of solidarity and support that impacted the masses and played prominent roles during the strikes and protests against fuel price increases.

Saula’s death generated widespread attention from local and international civil society. The Labour and Civil Society Coalition (LASCO) and Joint Action Forum (JAF) representatives paid a condolence visit to the NURTW office in Lagos State in recognition of his contribution to their organisation.

Although the police made some arrests following his murder, the circumstances surrounding his death remain a mystery to date. His death reminds Nigerians and would-be members of the volatility of the tragedy.
