Tears flowed freely in Lagos as Toba Ajiboye , a prominent official of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, was laid to rest following his tragic killing by gunmen.

The burial, held in Lagos on [insert burial date], drew hundreds of mourners including union members, family, friends, and community leaders who gathered to pay their last respects.

Ijaya, widely described as a calm and respected figure within the NURTW, was ambushed by unidentified gunmen on Tuesday, July 14, 2026. The Organising Secretary of the Lagos State Council of the NURTW was attacked while in his vehicle, which was riddled with bullets.

He initially survived the shooting with injuries but succumbed two days later.

His death sent shockwaves through transport parks across the state.

In tributes, colleagues remembered him as a peacemaker who worked to maintain order among drivers and resolve disputes without violence. “He was one of us who believed in dialogue,” one union official said. “Lagos has lost a bridge builder.”

Family members, overwhelmed with grief, described Ijaya as a devoted father, husband, and provider.

The Lagos State Police Command confirmed that an investigation into the attack is ongoing. A police spokesperson said operatives are reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses, and appealed to the public for any useful information.

Security has since been stepped up around major motor parks in the state as union leaders call for calm and urge members to avoid reprisals.

Ijaya was buried amid prayers, songs, and wailing. He leaves behind a wife, children, and a union that says it will miss his leadership.
