MTN Nigeria is looking beyond its 25-year transformation of Nigeria’s telecommunications industry, setting its sights on a new era driven by artificial intelligence, fintech, cloud infrastructure, 5G, 6G and other emerging technologies.
The telecommunications giant, which recently marked 25 years of operations in Nigeria, says its quarter-century journey is not merely a celebration of corporate longevity but a reflection of how technology has fundamentally transformed the lives, businesses and aspirations of Nigerians.
The Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director of MTN Nigeria, Modupe Kadri, said the company’s 25-year milestone represents decades of investment, innovation, connectivity and adaptation in one of Africa’s most dynamic technology markets.
Kadri described the journey as “25 years of connecting people, 25 years of investing, 25 years of innovation, 25 years of learning, sometimes stumbling, adapting and getting better.”
He said MTN Nigeria has had the privilege of participating in one of the most remarkable transformations in modern Nigeria, as the country moved from an era where access to a telephone was not guaranteed to one where smartphones and digital connectivity have become central to everyday life.
From ‘Hello’ to a Digital Economy
According to Kadri, the transformation goes far beyond telecommunications.
Over the past 25 years, mobile connectivity has helped reshape how Nigerians communicate, conduct business, access financial services, consume entertainment and interact socially.
Platforms such as WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook, alongside mobile banking, digital commerce and streaming services, have created an ecosystem that would have been difficult to imagine when MTN entered the Nigerian market.
Kadri said MTN’s journey mirrors this transformation.
“Yellow Street is not simply a museum about MTN. It tells the story of what happens when technology meets human possibility,” he said.
The Yellow Street exhibition, launched as part of MTN Nigeria’s 25th anniversary activities, showcases old mobile phones, recharge cards, products, campaigns and technologies that have defined different stages of Nigeria’s telecommunications evolution.
Kadri said each item represents more than a piece of technology.
“Behind every old phone was somebody hearing the voice of a loved one. Behind every recharge card was a Nigerian discovering a new freedom to communicate,” he said.
He noted that successive generations of mobile technology — from 2G to 3G, 4G and 5G — have continued to unlock opportunities, create businesses and generate jobs.
‘Nigerians Always Want the Very Best’
Kadri attributed MTN Nigeria’s ability to remain relevant over the past 25 years partly to the country’s highly demanding and innovative consumers.
He described Nigerians as energetic, resilient and exceptionally creative in adapting technology to solve everyday problems and create opportunities.
“The Nigerian people themselves, their humour, their energy, their ingenuity, their resilience, their extraordinary ability to make technology their own — that is the real exhibition,” he said.
He added that Nigerians’ appetite for the latest technology has also compelled MTN to continuously invest in its network and digital capabilities.
“The Nigerians always want the very best, and MTN Nigeria is here to give them that,” Kadri said.
The MTN executive highlighted some of the company’s technology milestones over the years, including its pioneering role in the introduction of successive generations of mobile connectivity.
“Over the past 25 years, MTN has been leading the way. We have very many firsts — first call on the mobile network, first 2G, 3G, first 5G and so many other things,” he said.
MTN’s Next Frontier: AI, Fintech, Cloud and 6G
But while MTN Nigeria is celebrating the achievements of its first 25 years, Kadri said the company is already focused on what comes next.
He identified artificial intelligence, fintech, cloud infrastructure, 5G and 6G among the technologies expected to shape the next phase of Nigeria’s digital economy.
Kadri acknowledged that the speed of technological advancement makes it impossible to predict precisely what the industry will look like 25 years from now.
But he said companies that want to benefit from future technological breakthroughs must remain embedded in the evolving technology ecosystem.
“I don’t think anybody really knows where technology is going, but you have to be part of the current tech stack to be able to take advantage of what the future holds,” he said.
The statement points to a broader shift in MTN Nigeria’s strategic direction — from being primarily viewed as a telecommunications provider to becoming a major player in Nigeria’s wider digital ecosystem.
As connectivity becomes increasingly intertwined with financial technology, artificial intelligence, cloud computing and digital services, the company’s next phase could extend significantly beyond traditional voice and data services.
More Than 92 Million Customers at the Heart of the Journey
Kadri also used the anniversary to recognise MTN Nigeria’s more than 92 million customers, many of whom have been part of the company’s journey from the beginning.
He said some customers have stayed with MTN since its early years, while others joined as new generations of technology emerged.
The company’s workforce also reflects that long history, with some employees in its contact centres having been with MTN since its first day of operations.
Kadri expressed gratitude to customers for their loyalty, feedback and willingness to embrace MTN’s products and services over the years.
“We’re really, really grateful for the past 25 years with the customers,” he said.
From 25 Years of Connectivity to the Next Tech Era
MTN Nigeria’s 25th anniversary comes at a critical moment for Nigeria’s digital economy.
The country’s rapidly expanding technology ecosystem, increasing smartphone adoption, growing fintech industry and rising demand for digital services are creating new opportunities — while also placing greater demands on telecommunications infrastructure.
For MTN Nigeria, the challenge is no longer simply connecting Nigerians.
The next challenge is how connectivity can become the foundation for a smarter, more inclusive and increasingly digital economy.
And that is where technologies such as artificial intelligence, advanced cloud infrastructure, fintech, 5G and eventually 6G are expected to play a defining role.
Twenty-five years after MTN helped change the way Nigerians communicate, the company is signalling that its biggest transformation may still lie ahead.
The first 25 years connected Nigeria. The next 25 could help redefine what Nigerians can do with that connection.
