Chelsea took full advantage of Manchester United’s second-half collapse to secure a victory over the visitors, condemning them to a third consecutive defeat and piling fresh pressure on manager Michael Carrick.
United are now without a win in nine matches across all competitions, their longest such run since October-November 1988.
The defeat, their fourth in the Premier League this season, left United 16th in the table, just a point above the relegation zone, with Carrick facing an increasingly uncertain future.
After an encouraging first-half display, United fell behind five minutes after the restart when Morgan Rogers found space in the heart of their defence and chipped the ball past the goalkeeper.
Chelsea doubled their advantage in the 64th minute after VAR spotted Lisandro Martinez pushing Wesley Fofana in the face during a corner. Martinez, who had been booked minutes earlier, received a second yellow card and was sent off.
Cole Palmer converted the resulting penalty to put Chelsea in control of the contest.
Chelsea thought they had added a third when Estevao found the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
United had shown promise in the first half but failed to convert their chances. Matheus Cunha had a close-range header ruled out for offside following a VAR review, while Bruno Fernandes fired over.
Amad Diallo also missed two opportunities with only Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders to beat.
United had restricted Chelsea to few clear chances in the first half, with their defensive shape and tactical discipline frustrating the hosts.
However, their organisation fell apart shortly after the restart.
Romeo Lavia won possession around halfway and passed to Rogers, who ran through the centre of United’s defence largely unchallenged before chipping the ball into the net.
Andrey Santos failed to close him down, while Harry Maguire and Martinez were unable to stop the forward from advancing into the penalty area.
Martinez’s dismissal further damaged United’s hopes of recovering. The defender was first booked for repeated fouls on Rogers before turning away from the ball and pushing Fofana in the face.
With United down to 10 men, Palmer’s penalty put Chelsea firmly in control.
The hosts had further opportunities to extend their lead, with Estevao going close and substitute Valentin Barco missing a late chance.
Bryan Mbeumo struck the crossbar for United in stoppage time, but the visitors could not find a way back into the game.
The result lifted Chelsea to fourth place in the Premier League, while United remained 16th and faced the possibility of ending the weekend in the relegation zone.
Chelsea had been booed by some supporters at half-time after a disappointing first-half performance, but their improved display after the break secured the points.
For Carrick, the defeat added to the pressure on him after United’s poor run of results, despite being given the opportunity to turn the team’s season around.
