The Federal government is intensifying efforts to ensure gains from Nigerian economic growth translate into tangible improvements in the livelihoods of citizens.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, the Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Doris Anite, said the Nigerian Economic Summit (NES) provides a unique opportunity to examine what is working within our economy, identify the gaps that remain, and develop practical and implementable recommendations for accelerating economic transformation.
“The Summit brings together the country’s leading policymakers, business leaders, economists, academics, development partners, labour representatives, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to deliberate on the challenges confronting our economy and, more importantly, the opportunities before us”.
She explained that the ultimate objective is to move Nigeria from potential to prosperity by ensuring that economic policies and reforms translate into tangible improvements in the lives and livelihoods of Nigerians.
“In preparation for a successful and impactful Summit, several pre-Summit events have been organised to facilitate meaningful stakeholder engagement, deepen policy dialogue, and generate actionable insights around key areas of Nigeria’s economic development. These events focus on strengthening the connection between education, skills development, employability, and access to sustainable economic opportunities.
“Focusing on translating Nigeria’s climate and sustainability commitments into practical actions that promote green growth, resilience, and sustainable development and examining the role of digitalisation, technology, and innovation as key drivers of economic transformation, productivity, and inclusive growth”.
Anite emphasized the need to “explore strategies for attracting and retaining sustainable foreign direct investment that enhances productivity, create quality jobs, strengthen local value chains, and promote shared prosperity”.
In his address, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, Dr. Tayo Adeloju, said, “For more than three decades, the Nigerian Economic Summit has convened government, business, labour, development partners and civil society to confront Nigeria’s defining economic questions.
“NES#32 asks one profound question: how do we ensure growth translates into productive enterprises, decent jobs and rising incomes — not just stronger GDP numbers?
“Nigeria’s reforms over the past three years — subsidy removal, exchange-rate unification, fiscal restructuring and bank recapitalisation — have begun to restore macroeconomic discipline, improve external buffers and revive investor confidence. These are real achievements. But stabilisation is necessary; it is not sufficient”.
He stated that the question before Nigeria has therefore shifted from restoring stability to converting it into transformation. “The next phase must strengthen the transmission from reform to investment, investment to productivity, productivity to jobs, and jobs to shared prosperity. That is the growth that works.
“This is urgent: Nigeria still faces high production costs, infrastructure deficits, low productivity, and insecurity, with over 90 percent of employment informal. The task is not to grow faster, but to grow differently — raising productivity and creating jobs at scale.
“A fragmenting global economy brings both risk and opportunity. Nigeria’s large market, resources, youthful population and position within AfCFTA give it real advantages — but only if we can produce efficiently and attract productive capital”.
Adeloju reaffirmed that “NES#32 is designed to move the conversation beyond reform implementation towards outcome delivery, asking plainly: what must change, who must act, what will it take to deliver, and how will we know it is working?”
The Summit is scheduled to take place between October 26 and 27, 2026, in Abuja.
