MohBad
Olatunji Disu, the inspector general of police (IGP), has approved a petition seeking a fresh investigation into the cause of the death of Ilerioluwa ‘Mohbad‘ Aloba.
The petition was filed by the family of the late singer. Mohbad died under mysterious circumstances on September 12, 2023.
In a statement dated September 29, 2026, Oladayo Ogungbe, the Aloba family’s legal representative, said the police re-investigation is ongoing despite the recent dismissal of a suit by the federal high court in Abuja.
According to PUNCH, Ogungbe said the family submitted the petition to the IGP on April 14, 2026, and the IGP’s office officially received it on May 7.
In the statement, the family raised concerns about inconsistencies in the previous investigation and demanded a comprehensive forensic process.
The lawyer said the IGP approved the petition and forwarded it to the Lagos state police command for immediate action.
The family also said the petition was assigned to officers of the special enquiry bureau for further investigation.
“The family’s representative has since been invited and has engaged with the new team of investigators assigned to the matter,” the statement reads.
“The family has continued to follow up with the investigators and remained engaged with the new investigative process.”
The federal high court in Abuja recently dismissed a suit by the Break the Silence Foundation seeking a re-investigation into Mohbad’s death.
Ogungbe said the NGO’s suit was separate from the family’s petition to the police.
The statement maintained that the court’s dismissal of the suit did not terminate the police investigation initiated through its petition.
“The Aloba Family therefore does not wish the public to conflate the dismissal of that suit with the separate investigative process already commenced pursuant to the Family’s petition to the Inspector-General of Police,” the statement added.
It said it would continue to cooperate with investigators by providing relevant information, documents, witnesses and other materials that could assist the probe.
The family appealed to the police to “conduct the investigation with diligence, independence and professionalism”.
In May 2024, pathologists reported that due to advanced decomposition, the cause of death could not be determined.
