The Democratic Party has secured control of both chambers of the United States Congress following major victories in the November 3, 2026, midterm elections, dealing a significant electoral setback to President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
The results mark a major shift in the balance of political power in Washington, with Democrats gaining control of the Senate and being projected to take over the House of Representatives.
According to reports by the Associated Press and ABC News, Democrats recorded significant gains across several states, defeating Republican candidates in traditionally conservative strongholds and competitive congressional districts.
The party’s Senate victories included key races in Texas, Kansas, South Carolina, North Carolina and Ohio, where Democratic candidates defeated Republican opponents.
In Texas, Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton, while former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper secured victory in his Senate race.
Democrats also recorded significant gains in the House of Representatives, flipping several Republican-held seats, including three congressional districts in Iowa.
The election results are expected to reshape the political landscape during the final two years of Trump’s second presidential term, potentially giving Democrats greater influence over legislation, government spending, presidential appointments and congressional investigations.
Trump reacts to Republican losses
Reacting to the election outcome, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to argue that Republicans would have secured a sweeping victory if he had personally contested the election.
“I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!” the president wrote.
His comments came after he repeatedly urged Republican supporters during the campaign to treat the midterm elections as though he were personally on the ballot.
Trump subsequently acknowledged the Democrats’ campaign efforts but maintained that the results were not necessarily a personal rejection of his leadership.
In an interview with the New York Times, he also said he was willing to accept the election results and work with Democrats.
What Democratic control means for Trump
Democratic control of Congress could significantly complicate Trump’s legislative agenda, particularly as the administration approaches the final two years of his presidency.
With control of both chambers, Democrats will have greater opportunities to scrutinise the administration, launch congressional investigations and challenge some of the president’s legislative priorities.
The outcome also represents a major political test for Trump’s Republican Party, which entered the election controlling both chambers of Congress.
The Associated Press reported that voter concerns over the cost of living, economic pressures and dissatisfaction with the administration contributed to the Democrats’ gains.
The November 3 elections are widely seen as an important political verdict on Trump’s second-term administration.
