At least 31 people have been killed after Russian forces dropped at least nine powerful bombs on a school building being used as a humanitarian aid centre in southeastern Ukraine, CNN reports.
The attack occurred on Monday, November 2, in Komyshuvakha, a village in the Zaporizhzhia region, where civilians had gathered to receive humanitarian assistance.
According to local governor Mykhailo Semikin, another 48 people remain unaccounted for following the bombardment, which caused the building’s reinforced underground shelter to collapse and triggered a fire.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack as “utterly horrific”, saying it happened while humanitarian aid was being distributed to residents.
The Ukrainian authorities also reported that the assault involved a second strike after the initial bombing, killing two rescue workers and four police officers who had rushed to help survivors.
Semikin said Russian forces used KAB-500 and FAB-3000 bombs, including a three-tonne aerial bomb designed to destroy heavily reinforced structures.
The attack came amid a wider Russian assault on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, with President Zelensky reporting that Moscow launched hundreds of drones and dozens of ballistic and cruise missiles.
Zelensky called on Ukraine’s international partners, particularly the United States, to provide additional air defence support to prevent further attacks.
The latest bombardment comes as diplomatic efforts to end the war continue, with US-mediated negotiations between Russia and Ukraine expected to resume in Abu Dhabi on November 10 and 11.
