Professor Adetowun Omolara Ogunseye is a pioneering Nigerian academic who has broken numerous barriers throughout her illustrious career. Born in December 1926 in Benin City, Edo State, to parents from Ogun State, Professor Ogunseye has left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s educational landscape.
A True Pioneer
Professor Ogunseye’s academic journey began with several groundbreaking achievements:
• In 1946, she became the first female student at Yaba College of Technology.
• In 1948, she earned a diploma from the same institution, making her the first female graduate.
• She was the first Nigerian woman to receive a degree from Cambridge University, earning a BA in Geography from Newnham College in 1952, followed by an MA in 1956.
Academic Excellence
Professor Ogunseye’s academic excellence extends beyond her undergraduate and graduate degrees:
• She earned a master’s degree in Library Science from Simmons College, Massachusetts, USA, in 1962.
• In 1973, she became a professor at the University of Ibadan, marking another milestone as the first female professor in Nigeria.
• She was also the first professor of Library and Information Services in the country.
Leadership and Legacy
Professor Ogunseye’s leadership and legacy extend beyond her academic achievements:
• Between 1977 and 1979, she served as the Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of Ibadan, becoming the first woman to hold a dean position in any Nigerian university.
