Peter Obi
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has condemned the recent renaming of Charly Boy Bus Stop and other landmarks in Lagos, describing the move as misplaced priority in the face of Nigeria’s worsening economic crisis.
Speaking during a recent meeting with veteran entertainer Charles Oputa, also known as Charly Boy, Obi said that such decisions were irrelevant when millions of Nigerians are battling extreme poverty and hunger.
“To me, it is totally irrelevant when you have millions of people who don’t know where their next meal will come from,” the former Anambra State governor stated.
The renaming was carried out by the Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA), which changed the name of the iconic Charly Boy Bus Stop to Olamide Baddo Bus Stop, in honour of Nigerian music star Olamide Gbenga Adedeji. The decision has since sparked outrage among Lagosians, many of whom are demanding a reversal and questioning the council’s priorities.
Obi, known for his austere style of governance, referenced his time in office to highlight a contrast in leadership philosophy.
“I built a facility in a hospital, and the owner said it should be named after me or my mother. I declined. I never commissioned any project or named anything after myself because they were done with public money. That’s why some people say I didn’t do much publicity as governor,” he recalled.
He also declared that his leadership approach will not change if given a chance to lead the country in the future.
“Even when I become President, my name is not going to be in any of the facilities. All I want is for the facility to function,” Obi added.
