The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed as false and malicious an online report alleging that the cancellation of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary was linked to an attempted coup.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier-General Tukur Gusau, described the publication as a deliberate attempt to incite fear and distrust among Nigerians.
Gusau clarified that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) never mentioned or alluded to any coup attempt, insisting that the story was baseless and unfounded.
He explained that the decision to shelve the Independence Day parade was taken to allow President Bola Tinubu attend a strategic bilateral meeting outside the country.
According to him, the move was also aimed at enabling troops sustain ongoing counter-terrorism and anti-banditry operations across the nation.
Responding to reports linking the cancellation to an investigation involving 16 army officers, Gusau noted that the probe was a routine internal process designed to ensure discipline and professionalism within the military.
“The outcome of the investigation will be made public in due course,” he said.
The Defence Headquarters urged Nigerians to disregard the false publication and continue to support the security agencies in their efforts to maintain peace and protect lives.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains firmly loyal to the constitution and the Federal Government under the leadership of the Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Tinubu,” the statement added.
