The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says it has shut down 16 sachet water factories in Rivers state over alleged regulatory violations.
Cyril Monye, NAFDAC’s spokesperson for the south-south zone, said in a statement on Friday that the affected factories were found operating in breach of health and safety guidelines during an enforcement exercise carried out across parts of the state.
According to Monye, the operation covered Asari Toru, Akuku Toru, Degema, and Ikwerre LGAs of Rivers.
He noted that owners and operators of the affected factories have been invited for questioning and further investigation.
Chukwuma Oligbu, south-south zonal director of NAFDAC, said the exercise was aimed at sanitising the sachet water production sector and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
Oligbu said some of the factories were operating in unhygienic conditions, while others allegedly used unsafe filtration systems, operated with expired licences, or provided false operational addresses.
He said factories found operating illegally or obstructing officials in the course of their duties would face immediate closure and possible prosecution.
The zonal director warned sachet water producers against manufacturing unregistered products or operating without valid licences.
He also urged members of the public to report illegal water production activities in their communities to help protect consumers from unsafe packaged water products.
