Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said the United States (US) and Iran have agreed on a framework for a peace deal, with the final text of the agreement already concluded and preparations underway for its formal signing.
Sharif disclosed in a post on X that Pakistan is now preparing for an electronic signing of the proposed agreement, which he said could take place within the next 24 hours, ahead of technical-level discussions scheduled for next week.
“We are closer to a peace deal than ever before. With finalisation likely expected in the next 24 hours, Pakistan is preparing for the electronic signing of the peace deal immediately after, followed by technical level talks next week.
“We would like to thank United States of America and Islamic Republic of Iran for their ongoing commitment during the negotiations, and we extend our sincere appreciation to our brothers in the region for their support. We are confident that this historic peace deal will form a strong foundation for lasting peace,” Sharif said.
According to details of the proposed agreement, the deal would pave the way for a 60-day extension of the ceasefire that initially took effect on April 7.
The arrangement is also expected to lead to the gradual reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route that has remained a major source of concern for global energy since the outbreak of hostilities.
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, said on Friday that issues relating to Iran’s nuclear programme would be addressed after the initial agreement is signed.
According to him, the parties intend to finalise the terms concerning Tehran’s nuclear activities during the 60-day period following the signing of the agreement.
Araghchi, however, noted that the parties could agree to extend the timeline if additional time is required to conclude negotiations on the nuclear component of the deal.
If signed, the agreement would mark a significant diplomatic breakthrough after months of conflict and international efforts aimed at preventing a wider regional war.
