The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has heightened surveillance and preparedness measures following the confirmation of an imported case of Ebola disease in Kenya.
The NCDC disclosed this in a statement posted on X, saying the Kenyan government confirmed the case on October 6, 2026.
According to the agency, the case was caused by the Bundibugyo virus and was linked to the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The NCDC stressed that there was no confirmed case of Ebola disease in Nigeria as of October 6.
“On 6th October 2026, the Government of Kenya confirmed an imported case of Ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo virus, linked to the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC),” the agency said.
“As of 6th October 2026, there is NO confirmed case of Ebola disease in Nigeria.”
The health agency said it was reviewing the risk posed to Nigeria while strengthening preparedness measures in collaboration with relevant national and state authorities and partners.
The NCDC urged Nigerians to maintain basic preventive measures, including regular handwashing with soap and water or the use of alcohol-based hand sanitiser.
It also advised members of the public to avoid contact with the blood and body fluids of sick people and the bodies of people who died from unknown illnesses.
The agency warned against handling sick or dead wild animals and consuming raw or poorly cooked bushmeat.
It further advised people who become ill to seek medical attention promptly at recognised health facilities and disclose any recent travel history to healthcare workers.
Travellers arriving from affected areas were advised to monitor their health for 21 days and immediately seek medical attention if they develop symptoms.
The NCDC also urged Nigerians to rely on verified information from official health authorities to avoid misinformation and unnecessary panic.
“Stay calm. Stay vigilant. Stay informed,” the agency said.
