Sunderland secured their first Premier League victory since August with a 1-0 win over Chelsea at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.
Enzo Le Fee scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot in the 36th minute after referee Jarred Gillett judged that Levi Colwill had pulled Brian Brobbey down inside the box.
The decision was controversial, with both players grappling as Brobbey drove towards goal, but Le Fee made no mistake from the spot to give Sunderland the lead.
The victory was Sunderland’s second league win of the season and their sixth in all competitions. It also eased some of the pressure on manager Regis Le Bris, whose side had been booed off after their 2-0 Europa League defeat to Dinamo Zagreb.
Sunderland had not won a league game since beating Fulham 1-0 in their second match of the campaign.
Chelsea struggled to find a response after falling behind, despite enjoying spells of possession and registering 10 shots. The visitors rarely threatened with clear-cut opportunities and missed the chance to move into the Premier League’s top four.
Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers endured difficult outings, while Rogers missed a free header that could have brought Chelsea level.
Palmer also appealed for a penalty after Luke O’Nien brought him down near the edge of the area, but a VAR review determined that the contact had occurred outside the box.
Chelsea were without Joao Pedro, who missed the match through a thigh injury, and the defeat marked their second league loss in three games.
Sunderland, meanwhile, had to withstand late pressure after Brobbey was substituted in the 77th minute. The forward had earlier come close to scoring with a header from Chemsdine Talbi’s cross.
The hosts also suffered injury setbacks, with captain Granit Xhaka and Brobbey both forced off with muscle problems.
The result lifted Sunderland from 20th to 18th place, leaving them one point from safety, while Chelsea remained fifth, two points outside the top four.
