At least one person has been confirmed dead by displaced hippopotamuses which invaded Guyuk and Shelleng Local Government Areas of Adamawa State.
This was disclosed by the Chairman of Guyuk Local Government, Mr Shalom Kassa, on Monday in the Banjiram community, who said the deceased was reportedly killed by one of the animals during the attack.
Kassa said the hippopotamuses, displaced by flooding around the Kiri Dam in Shelleng, were now within communities, farmlands, and riverbanks, causing fear among residents.
“This is a serious threat to human lives and means of livelihoods; the animals are destroying farmlands, invading flooded homes, and endangering residents and livestock,” he was quoted by PUNCH.
Responding to the crisis, Kassa, accompanied by the Chairman of Shelleng Local Government, Alhaji Abubakar Abba, and traditional leaders including the Kwandi Nunguraya of Guyuk, Kuruhaye, visited the state capital in Yola to seek government intervention.
He said widespread flooding across areas like Guyuk and Shelleng had driven wild animals, particularly hippopotamuses, out of their natural habitats and into residential communities.
Kassa noted that locals were powerless to act, as existing laws bar them from harming or killing protected wildlife species, including the invading hippos.
“We are appealing to the state Ministry of Environment, wildlife officials, and relevant agencies to urgently intervene before more lives are lost,” he said.
Kassa also extended his condolences to the victims of recent flooding in Yola town, where five persons reportedly died and 55 others were hospitalised.
The Secretary to the State Government, Mr Awwal Tukur, who received the delegation, assured them that the government would address the situation.
