Afrobeat heir and musician Made Kuti, has shed light on the lesser-known financial side of his grandfather, the legendary Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
Speaking on the Tea With Tay podcast hosted by actor Taymesan, Made revealed that Fela died broke despite being internationally celebrated and earning massive sums during his lifetime.
He attributed the late musician’s poverty to his overwhelming generosity and strong belief in equality.
“Fela died poor. He was extremely generous. He had the kind of money that could buy a whole street, but when he returned from a show, he’d open a box of cash and tell anyone who needed money to take it. Anybody from the street could walk into Kalakuta. It was an open-door policy,” Made explained.
He also shared that Fela refused to let his children call him “dad” to avoid special treatment and treated everyone equally.
“Everyone was equal in Kalakuta. Even we, his children, were just like everyone else,” he added.
Made further revealed that Fela’s activism earned him more admiration abroad than at home.
Referring to the 1977 military attack on Kalakuta Republic where soldiers beat Fela, raped women, and burned down the compound, Made lamented the public’s silence during the assault.
“Not one stone was thrown,” he said, adding that the people Fela spent his life fighting for stood by and did nothing.
Fela Kuti, who died on August 2, 1997, from AIDS-related complications, remains an icon in Nigerian music and global counterculture. While conspiracy theories have claimed he was poisoned by the Nigerian government, his influence endures through his music, his politics, and his bloodline.
