A Lagos Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus was allegedly set ablaze after it reportedly hit a commercial motorcycle (Okada) rider at Ogolonto Bus Stop along the Lagos–Ikorodu Road.
The incident reportedly occurred on the BRT corridor, where the motorcycle rider was said to have been riding when the collision happened.
An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told our reporter that the bus was set on fire at the scene after the accident. Other witnesses claimed that the rider was well known in the neighbourhood, prompting other motorcycle operators and some youths in the area to set the bus ablaze.
Following the collision, the injured rider was reportedly rushed to a nearby private hospital for emergency medical attention. On arrival at the medical facility, treatment had already commenced, while members of the rider’s family gathered around the premises.
One of the witnesses described accidents along the BRT corridor as a recurring concern, urging the Lagos State Government to address the situation.
The witness also raised concerns about the safety of BRT buses and their drivers, calling for measures to improve protection and prevent similar incidents.
“The corridor, BRT drivers, and the buses are to be adequately protected,” he said. He added that a locally used BRT Bus will cost over N60,000 while a new one is in the neighborhood of N200,000,000.
The Nigerian Police Division Officers (DPO) of Owutu and Ensure were at the scene to ensure no further incidents and to protect other lives and vehicles on the road.
The fire service also came to the venue but couldn’t save the bus. The first fire service bus had no enough pressure to arrest the furnace. While waiting for a backup, the officers including Hon. Arowolo Kolade Matthew, senior legislative leader, others were fetching water directly from the bus to mitigate the effect of the fire.
